I'm 49. My first "camper", in England, was an early 1960's Ford Thames van with a home-made pop-top, sink and stove; I was about 20, and 4 of us chipped in 25 pounds each to buy the crate! Then came a long period of cars until 1990, when with 2 little kids we thought it'd be fun to have a Vanagon, so bought a new 90 GL and had a Country Homes conversion done on it; 140,000 miles later we're still enjoying it. They're the greatest vehicles for a family that likes the outdoors and all kids think they're cool!
