Q: It seems to deal mostly with proper bleeding of lifters and adjusting
them in new engines
Reply: That procedure will not hurt any engine. I've run engines in at
1/2 turn and I run then after on just one turn. I've found (mid life
engines) that if everything fails; simply remove the rocker / shafts
assemblies and reinstall them if the lifters just can't be whipped into
silence any other way. I've also found chipped adjusting screws and
chipped valve stems in this procedure, so it isn't at all bad. I haven't
got a clue why it has worked several times for me and I'm not going to
try to analyze why it works. I just consider it a last resort trick that
has worked for me. I refer to Air Cooled Type IV engines. Don't be
surprised if it takes your lifters 15 minutes to quieten down. Seems that
running the van around the block and loading the engine speeds things up
a bit.
I'm not saying anybody elses procedure is bad, I've just stated my way.
Boston Bob may be refering to Water Cooled, although he has lots of
experience with both I'm sure.
