Don't strain all of the oil.
Just strain about a cup or two from the bottom of your drain pan after it
sits for twenty minutes, mixed with gasoline / kerosine /Coleman lantern
fuel and pour it through a paper coffee filter.
I only do this test on cars that are new to me so I can see the general
condition of the engine when I flush them in the course of evaluating the
required maintenance.
