DEFINITELY take Mr. Bulleys time assessments with a grain of salt...these
would be under totally optimum conditions, with every bolt, etc., coming
loose as it should, clutch, etc lining up on the first crack, no parts
breaking during disassembly, and or the finding of internal problems with
the motor. Not to mention having a well equipped shop with lift, and proper
rolling benches to sid in engine removal.
John, You need to buy a piston and cylinder set. and count on head work, or
new heads to do it right. Otherwise you are wasting your time. As well,
you can take a chance without going into the bottom end, but you should be
able to measure side to side play on the rods at a minimum, and end play of
the crankshaft to give you and indication of internal wear.
If it were me, on a budget, I would pull the motor and check the end
play...if well within tolerances, I would proceed.............but before I
started I would make sure I had everything I needed and check with the list
or a listee with experience to be sure I had all the parts I needed.......
