Chris,
I believe the T3 "Vanagon" sold in USA with 2.1 litre MV series
wbx motor and 5-speed gearbox had a final drive ratio of 4.83
I believe the T3 "Vanagon" sold in USA with 2.0 litre CV series
air-cooled motor and 4-speed gearbox had a final drive ratio of 4.57

However, I am a confessed air-cooled fan. So, I have often wondered
what the outcome would be if, when my 2.1 litre MV series WBX
engine is worn out, I replaced it with an air-cooled CJ or CU or CV
series engine.
One reason for considering the viability of such a swap is that the
JX series1.6 litre turbo diesel which was built as original in T3
Syncros has almost the same power and torque as the 2.0 litre
CJ, CV and CU series air-cooled motors. So, apart from less
on-call power for overtaking, could anyone enlighten me about
any significant problems apart from less power if I replaced my
MV series wbx motor with a CJ series air-cooled motor?
Here is a comparison of the five engines:
MV 70kW (90bhp) 160Nm@2800rpm (2.1 wbx Digifant)
JX 51kW (70bhp) 138Nm@2500rpm (1.6 turbo diesel)
CJ 51kW (70bhp) 143Nm@2800rpm (2.0 twin-carb a/c)
CU 51kW (70bhp) 137Nm@3000rpm (2.0 twin-carb a/c)
CV 51kW (70bhp) 137Nm@3000rpm (2.0 L-jetronic a/c)
My T3 Syncro (with MV series engine) has an AAK/AVV
code gearbox with a final drive of 5.43
The normal TD diesel T3 Syncro (with JX series engine)
has the same final drive of 5.43
The 2.0 litre air-cooled T3 two-wheel-drive (with CU and
CV series engines) has a final drive of 4.57
Of course, there are other issues in such a conversion from
liquid-cooled to air-cooled such as providing for cabin
heating and power steering.
