Subject: reality check: 87 Vanagon for $4000
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Hi,

I'm considering buying a 1987 Vanagon with the following characteristics: 7-seater sunroof 168000 miles original 2.1L water-boxer engine very recently fixed heads and cylinder block very recently fixed 4th-gear syncro everything (seems to be) functional dentless body a bit soiled inside $4000 asking price (in the San Francisco Bay Area)

I'd like to ask the collective wisdom of this list:

1) Is the asking price reasonable? How low is reasonable?

2) What kinds of defects should I particularly look out for in this year/model? I'm pretty confident about the engine and transmission as they're currently being worked on. What about: suspension? electrical? structure/rust? interior features?

Thank you very much!
