Subject:      Noise when releasing clutch in 1st gear...?

I'm getting a buzzing or a grinding noise when releasing clutch in 1st gear
and sometimes between 1st and 2nd.  Sometimes after I depress the clutch
while down shifting in to first.  It happens most when I'm attempting to
take off from a stop light.  If I rev up the engine and dump the clutch to
take of really fast it's even louder.  It does not seem to be a function of
the clutch pedal travel, but perhaps the throw-out bearing.  The noise seems
to 'wind down' right before it goes away -- like a drop in pitch combined
with reduction in volume.  The clutch does not slip.

Any ideas?

Do I need a new clutch?

Bearing?  Pressure plate?
