Yes very true..However, for the record....... The difference in the bus and vanagon aircooled is small enough that, with simple machining, the earlier (and better, IMHO) gears and shafts can be installed in the vanagon case and gear carrier. tTe center lines of the two units are the same. The LENGTH of the vanagon shafts is longer. Sooooo using the complete geartrain out of a bus, you mill the gasket face of the vanagon gear carrier to match the thickness of the original bus housing (and it's like .380 thicker so you'll be throwing chips for a while) You then mill the locating slots for the shft fork bolts on the vanagon shift rails a bit wider too..and then assemble as normal. Oh yeah..SOME combinations require that you grind about 1/4 inch off the 1-2 shft rail or it hits the ring in 1st gear...don't ask how I know this........ ;-) 72 bus gears seem to make the best ratio for a 1.6 NA vanagon..but I won't go there again.....
