Their voo-doo value is obvious: They protect the installed identical part from failure.

GO out to the shed and get rid of that spare wheel bearing and see how fast your current wheel bearings fail.

The problem I have found with spares for a Vanagon is that whatever you hold in reserve is never needed. Those spares must have some kind of voo-doo value.
