Ken, I don't know about the automatics, but my 88 GL with manual shift requires absolutely that the engine rpm be set with engine warm and idle stabilizer valve disconnected. I can't tell you how many mechanics I've seen try to set the rpm on the 2.1L without doing that. It invariably results in the the RPM being out of whack. I always had to set them straight.

Warm your engine, disconnect the valve, start the engine again and let it idle in Park or Neutral and see what happens.
