I'd do it. I used to use my vanagon 1.6TD to tow my race car all the time (1900 lbs without gear, probably close to 2200 with). My hitch was rated at 1000 lbs. Never once had a problem, and we all know how much power the diesels have :) Actually the same hitch was used to tow a stretched bug about 4000 kms roundtrip last summer behind another van.
