Subject: Need O2 sensor shield help / advise

I recently replaced my 02 with the generic sensor from Bus Depot. When I stripped the wire, I did not notice a braided shield. If there was one, I would have missed it because I made a clean cut right to the center insulation. The center wire had what looked like a teflon casing.

Should I tear it apart, and look for the shield ? How do I know if the 02 sensor is working properly? If the only way is to measure voltage, I have a cheezy $10 Radio Shack volt meter, do I need something more accurate?

Electron diagnosis challenged am I!
