Nice pics...you're right, you missed the two hanging plastic flaps in the upper section that normally allow ram air to flow into the box without having to go through the blower. They normally hang halfway open; ram air opens them farther, and the blower slams them shut. They are a completely stupid design, made to fail -- they have little plastic pins at the ends that snap *up* into little plastic clips so that the pin is resting on the open section of the clip. The pins wear, the opening gets bigger, they jam or fall out completely. Fixing them is no piece of cake either, access is...um...difficult. I ended up driving heated brads through from the side to form a suspension. In extremis you could glue them shut -- that would reduce ram air considerably, but the blower would work.
