I have a car alarm in the vanagon and it is sometimes irritating when it goes off unexpectedly, and the alarm squawks and the lights blink when it locks and unlocks. I've thought of disabling the alarm part for the lock and unlock part but have decided to leave it as it is.

I have the full Monty set up. Alarm for unauthorized entry, window crash alarm, the little blinking light to indicate it is armed, and a remote beeper that will go off up to a mile away (like a pager) if the vehicle is tampered with. Plus the remote door locks.

I'm getting used to it. The alarm goes off if I lock it with a door opened. It is loud and irritating but it is a good reminder. I think it is a good investment.

My Mercedes has an alarm too but no remote door locks and it is the only thing that frightened off thieves when they broke my rear window while sleeping at a motel. They ran off with a picnic basket and left the credit cards, expensive clothing and other expensive stuff as I am sure the alarm frightened them off. Next time I'll park near the office where there are lights and walk to our room.
