If you want to talk about devious...

...this veteran slow-car driver/right-lane driver/tailgater-hater has
often fantasized about a small tube leading out the bottom of the van
into which course sand or tiny (1-1.5m) shot could be dropped at highway
speed...ya think that might get 'em to back  off? Of course I couldn't
do that...

When encountering a tailgater I typically do the 'flash' brake lights
thing... if that doesn't get their attention, I lock all four wheels and
slide to a complete halt in a cloud of acrid grey smoke.

Okay, I don't, but again, I fantasize about it.

What I DO is wash the windshield COPIOUSLY. Since there is an unusual
corollary between the propensity to tailgate and the propensity to be
overly fastidious about the appearance of one's car, the spray from the
windshield washing tends to make them want to pass.

I've fantasized for a long time about mounting a rear-facing paintball
gun
for tailgaters. Now that I have a diesel vanagon, and a nice hollow
behind
the right rear tail light, I guess I don't have any excuse anymore.
Drill
.68 caliber hole in taillight. Maybe an oil injector in the exhaust
pipe--give it a shot of oil, then start firing away through the cloud.
The
impacts would look like chunks of poor-boy silicon gasket, and I could
always tell cops that my engine was eating its oil pan gasket and
throwing
it out the exhaust pipe... OOOHhh this is exciting.
