Assuming your 1.8 is Digifant II, the diesel flywheel or pressure plate (whichever one the TDC v-notch is on) needs a thin white splotch of paint 6° to the right of this TDC mark looking forward at the timing port. At 800 rpm idle you want this splotch to line up with the bell housing pointer when viewed under your strobe timing light. The A2 Bentley has the complete routine with photos and more particulars.
