AFAIK 82 diesels do NOT have the coolant low level control unit and no coolant sensor in the coolant tank. There is a wire in the engine harness and a 2 pin connector dangling at the coolant tank but it is not used and it is directly wired in parallel with the gauge temp sender. Shorting it will thus cause the temp gauge to peg and light to flash, the opposite of 83+ systems.

83+ diesels have the same coolant temp and level warning system as waterboxers.
