'un-adjusted valves' =  rocker gap is greater than spec is your assertion?

You're asserting that the rockers are clanking against the pushrod tips,
right? that does make a lot of clatter in my old straight six, also beats
the heck out of the ends of the pushrods. however, the clatter does not
subside after the engine is warmed up/hot.
