Subject: Tachless Vanagons (1984)
Content-Type: text/plain

Hi -

Were the Germans just really big into clocks in 1984? Because my vanagon has a large clock in place of something useful, like the tachometer that I'll bet most of you have. Living without one for the time being, I see that the makers were thoughtful enough to include little "shift dots" by some speeds on my speedometer. Do those shift dots represent red lining? The marked shift speeds are as follows:

First gear limit ---> 20 mph Second gear limit ---> 40 mph Third gear limit ---> 65 mph

Can some you who have the same model I have ('84 1.9L, stock tranny) and if you have a tach, what speed ranges are "healthy" in each gear? I know most of it is judged by feeling and listening to engine vibrations, but I'm curious about the tach's interpretation. For instance I often shift into fourth at 60 mph (close to the third gear limit). Is that ok? How close is it to red line? Also, is it ok to be going 30 mph and shift into third?

Thanks for the info!
