A few years ago my daughter and I did the AT from the '84 that I had then. I had never attempted an automatic before and it took us about three tries to get it right. The Bentley obviously has some info, but it's mostly diagrams with little explanation or instructions. I found that the Rabbit/Scirocco Bentley for 1975 thru 1979 had much more useful info and step by step instructions. That trans has only minor internal differences from the Vanagon one (beside the obvious difference in the output section because of the transverse mounting). We got some parts from a junk core that I got from a wrecking yard, but still spent about $400 on other parts from the dealer. You may be able to find cheaper parts from other sources. Be sure to disassemble and clean the valve body, but be very careful to keep the parts organized. Very interesting mechanism.

Good luck, Larry A.
