Hi Ed. The standard VW Vanagon block heater does fit on the syncro model as well. It should be available from any VW dealer - though likely special order. The Bus Depot also carries them - < $40. Installation requires only a socket wrench (and some plastic zip ties to route the wire to the license plate door) and takes about 20 minutes. DIY, or any garage could do it. The heater is pretty wimpy, but beats not having one at all. I used mine at Lake Placid two winters ago when temps were well below zero at night and, while the engine was cold when it started, I didn't hear the really disturbing "Whoa it's too cold" sounds I usually would hear after sub-zero nights. Other generic heaters of the coolant circulating variety could likely be fitted, but none will include the Vanagon in their application list. I've heard that people have used them, but proceed at your own risk. Frost plug type heaters cannot be used, nor can the magnetic type, since the oil sump is aluminum. IMHO, the best bet would be to install a remote starter that has the capability to keep the engine warm by running intermittently all night. Stereo and electronics stores typically offer these with installation included - I've seen one locally for < $200 installed - though they might charge extra for the Vanagon. In addition to performing the function of a block heater, you'd also get a remote starter which is a nice convenience. Shops will usually not install these on standard transmission vehicles, so if you don't have an automatic, you'll probably be on your own unless you are lucky enough to find a shop willing to trust you to leave your van out of gear when you park it for the night.
