Brady,

My 84 came with the original owners books. And even with them it's not easy.
However for heat I put the second and forth levers down from the top to the
right, third one towards the right on the red dot and the other one to the
left. That gives heat. For defrost move the top one to the right. The knobs
are for the blowers. Right is the front blower and left is rear blower. The
rear heater is under the back seat and you must move a little lever on it to
turn the water flow through it on. Foward is on for heat. However the rear
heater cores are prone to leak and it may not be there or have the hoses
disconnected underneath. Turn it on with the engine running and warm and see
if when the blower is on heat comes out.

Remember these cars were designed by Engineers (and maybe for engineers)

PS: Just wait untill you get a Eurovan, 3 sets of controls, assuming rear
heat and air.

I feel rather stupid, but I've had my vanagon now for 4 months, and I'm
still pretty perplexed to the ventilation controls and how to work them.  I
have a 1987 Vanagon GL, with AC.  There's two knobs on the ceiling with a
set of vents and the system goes down the center to the back, I assume
that's the A/C since it has the little snowflake on one of the knobs.

The controls on the dash are what confuse me....  there's four levers, two
knobs (fan control), and that's about all I can decipher.  Anyone have
"ventilation 101" FAQ or anything????
