The first time I crawled under my '85, there were two filters, as described below. I've kept both, just because if I removed the first one between the tank and the pump, that's exactly when the crud stuck in the tank will invade my pump. They're cheap enough, there isn't any harm in keeping it there. at least, none that I can think of...
