I use a large crescent wrench on the alternator pulley bolt to turn over the motor on both my '75 Bus and my Vanagon. You can push down on the top of the belt if it starts to slip.

I'm planning on adjusting the rockers on my '81 (w/ hyd. lifters) in the next day or so. I've read through the procedure in the manuals I have, as well as consulted the bostonengine.com site. The question I have is, what's the easiest way to rotate the type IV motor to find TDC on the cylinders? I know on a T2 upright motor, it's accomplished by turning the gen pulley, but obviously some things are different on this motor. Do I have to bump the starter or what? TIA- JJ --
