I haven't got the VIN numbers on the three 81s I've had but that all had
metal vents. Thats not saying that all were metal. However like you said
some had plastic but I think it was probably a matter of using up parts
in production line inventory.
My Westy was manufactured Sept 8, 1982 and it was sold as an 83 year
model. It is my understanding that ZERO air cooled were manufactured
after December 1982. That is something that has come up several times but
I'm thinking that sometimes the incomplete vehicle may sit three months
before it becomes a Westy.
There is also the possibility that the base vehicles came from different
plant locations.
