Subject: Oil Leak at Oil Cooler Solved
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Subtitled: Say Sailor, Feeling Lucky Tonight?

The last few months my 91 Carat has been plagued with an increasing oil leak at the left rear of the engine. I jacked up my beast of burden and crawled underneath to take a look. To no-one's surprise, the oil leak was coming from the oil cooler. A quick trip to the Bentley manual pointed to either the oil cooler o-ring being faulty or a loose oil cooler nut. The archives (long live the archives!) outlined the procedure involved in changing the oil cooler o-ring. It is not an expensive task, but it involves draining the cooling system (Do more and more of your repairs involve draining the cooling system too?). The other alternative involve re-torqueing the cooler nut. Bentley listed the torque at 18 ft. lbs. Sure enough, mine was loose. It was worth the try, as I am just not into draining the cooling system again. I retorqued the nut (27 mm) and it has been dry as a bone since. Hurrah!

Moral: If your water cooled Vanagon has an oil leak at the oil cooler, try retorqueing the cooler nut first.

Second rhetorical question: does your spell checker include "retorqueing?"

Good Luck and drive safely.
