The plastic filter between the fueltank & the fuel pump was put there by a PO who had to buy a new (expensive) pump ruined by crud in the gastank. I've been adding an extra filter between the tank & the pump on every fuel injected VW I've owned for years now. The only caution is that the fuel line between the "extra" filter & the pump has to be rigid enough so the pump doesn't suck it flat if(when) the filter gets clogged.
