My '68 Squareback had a 1968 German dime (ten pfennigs or whatever the heck it was) under the rear seat when I replaced the original battery in 1978. I asked someone at a dealership about it and was told that it was pretty common for assembly workers to toss a coin inside the vehicle "for luck".
