I have found both the Bentley and Etka to be inaccurate regarding which Vanagon has which filter. Thru '84, all Vanagons (not sure about California models) have the square filter before the pump (part number 133 133 511). Most models from '90-91 have only the metal-canister filter after the pump (my part # 71028). But between '84 and '90 I have seen any combination of one filter, the other, or both. In many cases, the "extra" filter may have been added by the dealer or repair shop. Also, it may depend on the fuel tank. In '90-91, a tank was used with a different sized nipple, which was designed to eliminate the square before-pump filter. I have seen some earlier Vanagons with this tank, perhaps put in by the dealer as a replacement.

If you're not sure, it's easy to check by just peaking under the van.
