Ed,

I have a used one they can have for free.
It's a standard issue Canadian VW "oil pan heater"
It bolts to the underside of the case and heats the case and everything in it.
But I would like the postage for it paid.

But if they really want to heat the engine they should buy one of the circulating coolant heaters.
These things heat all the coolant in the engine as well as pump it all around so every thing gets nicely warmed up.
I have seen them for $60 CAD or about $40 USD.
They work very well.
It works of 120V wall plug in.
Kind of a poor mans  Webasto heater.

  time I touched it I got blisters on three fingers.  What I've seen, they are
  all about the same the only draw back is running the power cord, no mater
  how I tried I still had to run it by the belts.
