Subject: diesel water pump finally went

After finishing my rebuilt, I found the water pump was making a bit of noise. It was getting noticeably worse over the last two days. Tonight, it became a horrendous squeal. Now I know what people have been talking about on the vanagon list.

So, it finally went. I got as close to home as I reasonably could, and had it towed the rest of the way. No permanent damage done- no overheating- I could still touch the block and head without burning myself..

so, I assume it was failing, but still moving coolant. It seemed to completely cease up in it's final moments. Is this typical? I'll know exactly what happened when I get it off the engine next week.
