I'll probably jinx myself for sending this post, but here goes. I have 269,000 miles on the original engine on my 85 GL. Head gaskets were changed about five years ago, for the usual reason. About three years ago, I lost compression in #3 cylinder due to a leaking exhaust valve. I had both #3 and #4 exhaust valves replaced. Now I have a small coolant leak at the right side head gasket juncture. It's small enough to ignore for now. Other than that, the engine and transmission (4 speed manual) are original. It's had regular oil changes every 4,000 miles, always with a new filter, either VW or Wix. I use Valvoline 10W-30 in winter and Valvoline straight 30 weight the rest of the year. The air and fuel filters are changed regularly. The van is driven gently and doesn't tow anything. I may see 300K, then again, I may be getting a rebuild soon. The van runs strong, but uses some oil. It's my day-to-day transportation, with an occasional side trip to Florida.

Anyone pass 300K on their original engine?

Isn't there a dude on the list who has driven his van 300,000 miles on the same engine? Or is he on the type 2 list?
