Richard, Having just crawled out from under my '84 yesterday [replacing part of exhaust manifold] this is fresh in my mind. The rear strap that attaches to the muffler is made up of several pieces. I doubt that you lost them all. Try to determine what you are missing. It could be just a nut/bolt. The rest of the individual parts should be easy to find at a local junk yard. The fact that you heard a change in the sound of your motor would make me suspect that you may have a crack in the system somewhere. Better check it out. Good luck.
