When I had an intermittent high idle, a worn out throttle cable caused me to chase my tail adjusting the position switch. When the symptom first appeared, a quick blip of the throttle would settle things down until the operation of the throttle became so stiff that the problem was obvious. At first, I thought no problem and I lubricated the cable with some miracle drug. This was pointless because the cable had failed in such a way that its jacket had bunched up in the sheath.
