1. Your compression is quite low. it is very likely that your van
won't start once the weather warms up and you have driven a few miles.
Normal is around 120-130 psi, VW allowed some broad tolerance between
cylinders (20psi?) and low is around 100 psi. If money is an issue,
over-sized rings, honing, and an el-cheapo valve job could buy you a
couple years trouble free, but replace the oil pump with an oversized
(melling) while you have the motor out. If you intend to rebuild it
soon, I'm not opposed to using "motor honey" to thicken the viscosity
enough to bring the compression up. The real solution is a thorough
rebuild.
2. 12mpg is no surprise if it hasn't been tuned, has vacuum leaks
(hoses and FI seals) and has lousy compression. Our 2056 cc (96mm x
71mm) gets 18-21 depending on how hard I drive it. The Westy Deluxe is a
load.
3. Don't ever get rid of the stock Bosch fuel injection system.
NOTHING is better for typical type 4 service, particularly on a stock,
or slightly modified motor (ratio rockers, slight stroke, etc.). The
Bosch L-jetronic system has wide capabilities for dealing with changes
in induction, load, temp, etc. Only when you bump it up to 103's and a
wild cam, will you want to look at carbs, and then you will realize what
a pain in the a** they are. Learn to work on the EFI. It is really
simple, as most of the folks who have taken the time to learn it will
tell you.
4. Your right rear tin is normally metal. Your van used to have AC,
or at least this motor did. When the AC compressor is removed, you have
to find that elusive piece of tinware your previous owner has crafted
from fiberglass. Pick up a replacement at a bug show, or at a junk yard.

Subject: 1981 Questions
Hi all,
I just got a 1981 vanagon Westy DeLuxe camper & I have
a few questions.
1. On a 900 mile trip I only got about 12 MPG. I
checked the plugs & the Compression & found the plugs
are very Black meaning that the engine is runnibg very
rich I think.
Compression in all 4 cyclinders was low on first crank
but came up to 95 after 3-4 turns.
Only 1 shop here in my area that will work on the VW
fuel injection systems & another one is 50 miles away.
What do you think about getting rid of the original
fuel injection system & installing Weber dual IDF 2
Barrel carbs? How will it affect the power & what
mileage can I expect if I do go with the weber setup.
2. Should all the engine tin be made of metal? The
left rear tin in mine is made of fiberglass. Here is
the link to the tin piece in question:

I guess that is all for now but I will have more
question in the future I bet.
Mike
