I looked at a Eurovan camper a couple days ago. You can't start those
if the passenger seat is turned to the back. Seems like the VW
engineers have taken your idea and gone too far with it...

Now you would think that VW or a clever vanagon.com list member would
have
figured out a way to make a switch that would not allow a van to start
with
the top up. A simple switch. Or an alarm that goes off when the van is
started up with the top up.
Does anything like this already exist? If not it would be very easy to
rig.
Any ideas anyone? Seems like a smart improvement to me and I'd like to
wire
my van that way.

Not so funny boys & girls. I had a customer this past summer who
drove into their garage with the pop-top up. My repair bill was $8000
and
change, CND of course, and the repair bill to the garage was over 10
grand.
Their insurance company paid up ! Check your top before motoring off !
