I was talking to my local VW Repair Specialist and he said he offers to
rebuild a 1.9 to a 2.1 to everyone who brings one in. He says he'd have to
change the crank, pistons and rods as well as add an oil cooler. From what
he says, it appears the difference seems to be in the stroke and not the
bore size as he never mentioned anything about changing the piston sleeves
although new ones are part of the re-build. He quoted me $2,100 on 1.9 and
add $500 for a 2.1. That's if he pulls the engine. Minus $400 if I took it
out and put it back.
