The level sensor is just a pair of s/s pins stuck down into the coolant. An open circuit between the pins should make the gauge LED flash. Depending on the particular control unit installed it may or may not also peg the gauge. I think they shifted sometime in '85 to the type that doesn't noticeably affect the gauge reading. As you say, it's not hooked to the engine control electronics in any way. david
