I'm looking for feedback from any list members who have done their own water boxer engine replacement. I have a high-mileage 1.9 liter. I'm thinking of attempting the replacement myself, using an engine from one of the recommended long-block rebuilders. Following the Bentley manual, how difficult a job is the engine exchange? Do you require any special tools beyond those found in a well-equipped home garage? Is a chain hoist or lifting device necessary? Is this a two-person job? Any feedback would be appreciated. The van runs well, but at 269,000 miles, the right head gasket is starting to leak coolant again. The original engine has served me well, but it's time to plan for a replacement.
