HI,
I had the same problem with my 85. I found that if I loosened the AFM
tension spring about 10 notches my van no longer surges at idle. I still
have not figured out why this would cause/not cause the surging at idle.
I monitor my closed loop 02, and my computer is still able to adjust the
fuel properly, even though my loosening the spring richened up the open loop
fuel/air mix.
Be careful if you adjust the spring tension. I found if I tightened mine it
would hesitate 'just off of idle' when I was trying to drive off from a
stop. Not a good thing at a busy intersection. So test your adjustments in a
safe parking lot etc.......
