Yes, I have done this several times. The gas tach does NOT work automatically with a diesel engine. You need a diesel tach and an alternator with a "W" connector. If you want to use a gas tach you will need a signal converter. These are commercially available. They still connect to the "W" lead of the alternator but they convert the electronic signal to one compatible with the gas tach. Gas tachs connect to the ignition coil. Diesels do not have an ignition coil. If you want more info feel free to ask.
