I have an issue of Caravan and Outdoor Life that my buddy brought by so I could look at it. It's September 1999. It has a review of towing with the VW Caravelle Exclusiv. My buddy spent the last few weeks in S. Africa at a soaring competition. He said after he got off the plane, he loaded into a brand new VW Vanagon with an inline 5-cylinder engine.

I intend to scan this magazine in, and make it available for you to look at (especially if there's interest in it!)

It is a beautiful van towing a small camper trailer. The writer encountered a mint condition 1956 bus (same blue color) that a German student was driving on his tour of Africa. They refer to the caravelle as a "volksiebus sibling"..
