Subject: Starter bolt at top of engine
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Help needed. Still trying to locate the source of an oil leak that seems to allow a drop of oil on the bottom of my starter every few days. This is on my 1989 Vanagon GL. It seems to be coming from the top of the tranny where the starter bolts on.

Today I noticed that the top bolt that holds the starter onto the engine is missing a nut. Looking toward the front of the vehicle the top right bolt that seems to hold the starter through the transmission and bolt it to the engine is missing a nut. The bolt needs a hex or Allen wrench to hold it while the nut is tightened on.

I'd rather do this myself than have a hired mechanic do it.

I boutht a M10-1.25 nut and tried to get it to thread. It does not go on easily although it threads the bolt tip holding the left of the tranny on the engine. easily.

I need to know the size of the allen wrench so I can secure the other bolt end while I tighten the nut. I also need to know if I bought the correct size nut.

Anyone who knows please contact me. I don't want to risk stripping the bolt or nut if it is the wrong size. The bolt will not come out because it is obstructed by the starter otherwise I'd take it out to see if the nut is the proper one.
