Subject:      1985 Digijet Surging at idle (AFM?)

Hi,

The van has been surging for a certain time now.  I checked for vaccuum
leaks and found that the gasket between the throttle body and the intake
plenum was leaking a bit, also the hose connecting the AFM to the throttle
body was leaking.  Both were replaced today.  BTW the van has the new little
Volkwagen plugin for the AFM.

Hum...

Still surging.

I dismantled the AFM from the van, brough it inside (it's freezing outside
and my garage isn't heated!).  Openned it to look at the mysterious rheostat
I've been reading a lot about on the list.  Cleaned it and took some
resistance measurments.

Now the questions :

1. Can the AFM induce surging ?

2. Is it correct that the ohm reading I have through the range isn't linear
at all ?

3. How can I tell the AFM is OK without a hint of a doubt ?

Thanks in advance for the input, the Vanagon electronic engine managment is
beginning to get some lousy words out of my own mouth...
