In the past, list members have recommended rethreading the hole with a 1/2" pipe tap (from Home Depot?) and using a pipe type of plug. I have not tried this myself, but it sounds reasonable. Lots of grease on the tap should help to catch the metal shavings and keep them out of the engine.
