I time mine at 5 degrees BTDC.
The European Haynes book says 10 degrees BTDC but I figure that with the gas
I can get in USA it would be better to be prudent.  Besides its the max
advance under load that really matters.
I adjust the idle down with the volume screw, to about 800 rpm.
Here in South Carolina, there is no vehicle inspection anymore and there has
never been an emissions test.
I adjust the idle the old fashioned way,  with a vacuum gauge.   The idle is
smooth and reliable and will hold the A/C as I dont have any relay to set the
idle higher.
As for power, I can easily cruise at 80 mph and when I was out west last
year, I always seemed to be able to overtake newer 2.1 vans.
I can cruise with cruise control at 4100 rpm max.
