Sorry to say the real moral of this story is not to use auto reply!

What can happen is this: you get a message from the listserve and your email client auto replys, your reply goes to the listserve and the listserv sends it out to everyone including you, thus generating another autoreply. Eventually you run the risk of flooding and crashing email servers and/or clients. Also if your auto reply goes to someone who ALSO has set up an autoreply.......! TomC wisely has set this listserv so that a straight reply goes only to the original sender instead of to the listserv. Maybe this is why. I used to administer a network and auto replies were no-no.

Here's the deal:

When a listmember turns on auto-reply and forgets to set his/her subscription options to NOMAIL, the list messages generate an auto-reply that goes to the sender. You will typically get one for each message you post to the list.

When you get one, please forward it to me and I will temporarily turn off the list-member's mail. No need to bother the rest of the list.

David's subscription is now set to NOMAIL.

Moral of the story - Before *YOU* go on vacation, please visit http://gerry.vanagon.com/info/unsubscribe.html and follow the instructions for "Unsubscribing temporarily".

Thanks, TomC
