Has anyone popped a Porsche 6 in their Vanagon? I used to have a couple
of 914's and the swap was fairly easy on those, can't imagine it being
much more painful on the Vanagon.

There are "turn-key" 914-6 conversion packages available from
 http://www.motormeister.com  which come with all induction, tin,
exhaust, etc. (of course, you'd want the 911 exhaust, rather than the
914, as the motor is turned 180 degrees in the 914).

The cost if very high, but the HP is intriguing. The 2.7 would have EFI,
and the flattest profile (to fit under the deck lid. Hmmm. I can imagine
tranny failures if you weren't really careful.
