Subject: 1981 Questions

Hi all, I just got a 1981 vanagon Westy DeLuxe camper & I have a few questions.

1. On a 900 mile trip I only got about 12 MPG. I checked the plugs & the Compression & found the plugs are very Black meaning that the engine is runnibg very rich I think. Compression in all 4 cyclinders was low on first crank but came up to 95 after 3-4 turns.

Only 1 shop here in my area that will work on the VW fuel injection systems & another one is 50 miles away. What do you think about getting rid of the original fuel injection system & installing Weber dual IDF 2 Barrel carbs? How will it affect the power & what mileage can I expect if I do go with the weber setup.

2. Should all the engine tin be made of metal? The left rear tin in mine is made of fiberglass. Here is the link to the tin piece in question: http://www.geocities.com/realthing74/left-rear-engin-tin.jpg

I guess that is all for now but I will have more question in the future I bet. Mike
