I just picked my brand new Bentley Manual up from the VW shop. Copyright 1991. It reads 10cm (4").

While we're on the subject of Manuals. I was originally going to buy a Chilton's at Amazon for $67.95. I've been a "shade tree" mechanic all my life as I had been either too poor or too stingy to pay someone else to work on my vehicles. I trust Chilton and have used them for many years. I have even re-built engines using them. I also have a Haynes manual that came with my truck. I found it to be vague and ambiguous at best. I know there was a post in the past couple of days by someone who said they found one for around $20.00 that he seemed pretty happy with.

When I ordered the Bentley I was skeptical of anything that said "factory repair manual". I figured it was written in "Certified Trained Mechanic" lingo. I was assured by the guy at the shop that it was the one for me, even after I asked him if it was written in "shade tree" mechanic language. The "technical" info is very thorough. However, the "how to info" is not as simple as I would have liked or in a format I'm used to. Has anyone had any experience with the Chilton manual? Is it as easy to understand and use as most of their stuff sold to the general public?

Unfortunately these things have to be ordered and there usually aren't any on the shelf for you to look through to see which one you like best. I will probably keep the Bentley due to the fact that special orders are generally not returnable.

Thanks,
